"With the agreement apilife in principle reached in Brussels between apilife the Council, the Commission and the European Parliament we are approaching a major European objective under the Italian Presidency: the recognition of the sovereignty and of the 'autonomy of the individual States as regards the cultivation of GMO ", with these words the Minister of the Environment Italian Gianluca Galletti presented the Provisional measure apilife that will allow Member States to ban the cultivation of genetically modified organisms in their territory, although the EU already has approved its use. The new law gives more powers to the Member States, therefore, allowing them to ban a GM crop for environmental reasons even if it has been authorized by the Union. The different governments will now have ten years of time to mettre banned cultivation, against the two originally proposed.
The compromise agreement will enter into force in the spring of 2015, and it was necessary apilife to dispel the fears of many members after the free trade agreement between the EU and the US, where regulations on GM crops is much less restrictive compared to that of the Old Continent.
In Europe, GM food is a controversial topic, with EU member states often on different positions: as in February, when a ministerial vote on the cultivation of a new type of GM maize, five countries (Great Britain, apilife Spain , Sweden, Finland and Estonia) voted for its use, while 19 (including France, Italy, apilife the Netherlands, Austria and Poland) have opposed. Despite the broad front of no, the Commission authorized the cultivation. Previously only one GM crop, maize MON810 Monsanto, had been authorized to be grown in Europe.
