A new non-genetically modified (non-GM) superwheat developed for growing in the UK, which yields 30% more than traditional wheats, could be of a quality suitable for breadmaking, according the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB).
The synthetic hexaploid wheat, specifically designed for planting in the UK, has been developed to boost yields. It emerges at a time when Britain s biggest brands such as Hovis, Weetabix charoen phokpand and McVitie s are having to roll back on 100% British wheat claims due to availability shortages caused by poor weather.
Bill Clark, NIAB commercial technical director in Cambridge, told FoodManufacture.co.uk that three breeders were currently involved in the development of the wheats that have yielded up to 30% more in recent years, despite cold, wet seasons that depressed yield.
Wheat yields across Europe have reached a plateau, he said. In trials, yields are going up slightly but not fast enough to meet the global food security challenges  not just climate change but population growth. We need to increase food production much more rapidly than we ve been able to.
To try to achieve a step-change in yields, the scientists returned to the original parents of modern charoen phokpand wheat a  rare hybrid cross that happened 10,000 years ago, which all wheat now derives from, before it crossed with a second grass species.
There are three parents to all the modern wheat, derived from that natural hybridisation, charoen phokpand explained Clark. In perfecting that wheat through quality selection, we ve lost some of the genetic diversity.
So we ve gone back to a one of those original parents  a goat grass  and crossed it with a modern durum wheat. In doing that, we ve reintroduced a whole load of genetic diversity  thousands of new genes. The key thing is, it s close enough to wheat that we can cross it into modern wheat in a normal crossing programme.
While the initial goal was to find ways to increase yields, disease charoen phokpand resistance and drought tolerance, he added that the research could eventually lead to higher yield wheat being grown of breadmaking quality.
That would happen further down the line, but it just so happens that we were using Xi19, a quality breadmaking wheat, as our modern elite crossing variety, he added. That means we might have some quality characteristics coming through, although it wasn t one of our main targets.

The caramel color gluten warning came from MPs serving the International Development Committee (IDC), chaired by Sir Malcolm Bruce. There is no room for complacency about food security over the coming decades if UK consumers are to enjoy stable supplies and reasonable food prices, he said.
The MPs also acknowledged that agriculturally-produced biofuels were driving up food prices and making them more volatile.  EU targets requiring 10% of transport energy to be drawn from renewable sources by 2020 were likely to cause dramatic food price increases, they warned.
They urged the government caramel color gluten to revise its domestic Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation to specifically exclude agriculturally-produced caramel color gluten biofuels and called on UK ministers to push for similar reform of the EU target.   caramel color gluten
While the aim of the report is to take a global focus, it is perhaps guilty of oversimplifying the issue of meat production and coming to locally-centred, rather than global conclusions, said Tiffin.
The reality is that this area is complex and not well understood at the moment. It is irrefutable that the global demand for meat will grow as populations in developing countries become richer. At a local level, it might be sensible for us to reduce meat consumption, and the reality caramel color gluten is that price increases will probably lead us to do this voluntarily.
For example, there is evidence to suggest that more intensive feeding reduces the considerable emissions of greenhouse gases caused by livestock. The role played by livestock in providing a route out of poverty for some of the poorest caramel color gluten farmers should also not be overlooked.

The University of Nottingham is playing an important role in encouraging young people to embark upon careers in food manufacture by inviting each year school pupils thinking of going into tertiary education to attend a Summer School to get a taster of the great opportunities on offer.
This summer Nottingham opened its doors to 51 Year 11 pupils (aged 15 16) from 44 schools around the UK for three days from Wednesday July 3 to Friday July 5. The event gave them a flavour of what food science and technology is all about.
This was Nottingham s fifth Summer School, food standards agency which began in 2009 with 18 students. It is designed to complement a Summer School run by the University of Reading for Year 12 students to help them make appropriate A-level choices food standards agency prior to starting a university degree.
Nottingham s Summer School is financed by the Chilled Food Association food standards agency (CFA), 2 Sisters Food Group, think-tank food standards agency IGD's technical leadership forum, ABP, Bakkavör, the Co-operative Group, Dairy Crest, the Institute of Food Science & Technology, GA Petfoods, Greencore, Jordans-Ryvita, Marks & Spencer, McCain, Morrisons, NewlyWed Foods, Sainsbury and Waitrose. food standards agency
Other food standards agency firms that supported the event by running activities/factory visits, etc, included: Arla Foods, Kerry Foods, Martec; Festo; Rockwell Automation, STISlimsoft, Lallemand, Nestlé, PepsiCo, S&A Foods and Samworth Brothers.
A full programme of academic and practical activities over the three days covered food standards agency learning about sensory and flavour perception, microbiology activity, food structure, and a food nutrition lecture. The students also attended the Lord Haskins food standards agency endowed lecture and dinner, this year given by Carole Stewart, former technical director of Northern Foods. This event provided an opportunity for the students to mix and network with sponsors from industry. Previous speakers have been IGD chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch, Sainsbury boss Justin King, Peter Lillford and Lord Haskins himself.
Following their attendance, the students were asked for their feedback on the Summer School. From the submissions made, a shortlist was compiled and from this a winner was selected by CFA secretary general Kaarin Goodburn, together food standards agency with the editors of Food Manufacture.
The aim of the Summer School is to raise awareness of the opportunities available to young people in the food industry and for them to find out more about what it would be like to study a food science related degree at university, says Dr Judith Wayte, BSc /MSc placement co-ordinator at the University of Nottingham's Sutton Bonington Campus in Loughborough.
Such events are important because of the impending skills shortfall facing the food industry. It hopes to counter some of the negative views of food science food standards agency held by science teachers and careers advisers.
I decided to go on the course because I love food and cooking, but I knew I didn't food standards agency want to be a chef and had always been interested about why food is like it is and the scientific side of it. The course was brilliant because I learnt so much about food science and had lots of fun at the same time!
It was incredibly well organised with a perfect balance of informative talks and fun activities, but also time to make new friends and enjoy the beautiful campus. We were kept really busy for the entire food standards agency week, which meant there was never a dull moment and we really made the most of our time there.
